Associate Professor Peter Tait is an applied environmental economist focusing on environmental valuation for public policy.

Peter uses economic non-market valuation methodologies to create new knowledge about environmental outcomes in government policy, and about estimated values for environmental attributes in consumer product choices in NZ’s primary industry export markets. Choice experiments are a leading contemporary approach to establishing value estimates where market data is absent. By developing, extending and applying choice experiment methodologies to important issues within the New Zealand context, Peter creates new knowledge on how this methodology can be applied to key environmental issues including degradation of water quality, biosecurity and loss of native biodiversity species and habitat, and food production. This research is used by local, regional and national policy makers and industry groups.
