The Economic Value of Antarctic Activities

Since 2007, the AERU has been periodically commissioned by Antarctica New Zealand to produce a report assessing the contribution of Antarctic-related activities to the Canterbury and New Zealand economies. Previous reports have shown that these contributions are significant, with Antarctic-related activities directly contributing approximately $178 million to the New Zealand economy annually (Saunders et al. 2007; 2013; 2016).

In 2021, Antarctica New Zealand commissioned a fourth report examining the impact of Antarctic-related activities to both the Canterbury and New Zealand economy for the years 2016 -2020. This involved data collection for an economic impact analysis of Antarctic-related activities in Canterbury and New Zealand. As of December 2022, the publication of this report is forthcoming.
