The purpose of the AERU is to exercise leadership in research for sustainable wellbeing. It was founded by the New Zealand Cabinet in August 1962, and has been an important part of New Zealand’s science and innovation system ever since. It is entirely externally funded.

Distinguished Professor Caroline Saunders has been Director of the AERU since December 2001. Caroline leads a team of expert researchers and postgraduate students, who undertake research and deliver reliable knowledge commissioned by a wide range of domestic and international agencies, public sector departments, private companies and other organisations.

The AERU welcomes enquiries about opportunities for future research.
